Maple fretboards are typically found on Fender solid bodies and their clones (which almost never come with ebony). You should be able to find ironbark eucalyptus, aka red or mugga ironbark, scientific name eucalyptus sideroxylon there in New Zealand. It is pretty much as hard as ebony, and if you want to have it black, it will take India ink as a dye.
